The opportunity to make this CD had been brewing for a while with my writing tunes on the mandolin for much of 2001 and 2002 but it really took hold when I started writing lyrics and songs during the latter part of 2002. In December, I was let go from my computer programming job of five years. As I was walking out the door, I started the song which later in the day became "Laid Off Blues". Finally I would have the time to dedicate to making some decent demo's that I could shop to a publisher. As I learned more about the process of shopping songs, I decided an entire CD would make a better "demo". Given that I was out of work, I didn't really want to spend a lot of money on it. I had a preamp, mic, and computer with a decent sound card and multi-track recording software, so I was able to get started pretty quickly. What I didn't have was a producer or a band so I made due with what I had which was acoustic guitars, mandolin, mandola, electric bass, family, friends and nothin but time. I decided this was gonna be a home made production and to find out how far I could take this experiment. I learned a lot along the way about engineering, production and the challenge of making a CD where each song doesn't sound the same. The key was to also learn about midi drum sequencing, and utilizing available musicians such as my sons Jacob and Sam on flute and vocals respectively, my brother Charlie and his son Ben on accordion and stand up bass respectively and my friend Paula Lykins who added some fine vocals at the end. The credits are listed below. I hope you enjoy it in the spririt with which it was (home)made. d.
